Stained Glass

Glass that colors the light.

Stained glass is cutting pieces of colored glass to a pattern, wrapping each piece in copper foil, and soldering the seams together. Once finished, you have a panel that catches light: a suncatcher, a small window, a lampshade.

The craft has real costs. Glass is sharp, the soldering iron runs hot, and lead solder needs ventilation. None of it is forgiving.

Most people start by taking a class. There's too much technique and too many tools to figure out alone. Beginner classes usually include glass, foil, and access to soldering equipment, plus an instructor who keeps you from cutting yourself.
