Acrylic Paint Pouring

The paint practically marbles itself.

Acrylic paint pouring involves mixing acrylic paint with a pouring medium, layering the colors in a cup, and pouring the mixture across a canvas. You tilt the canvas to move the paint around, and the colors form natural swirls and cells as they settle.

The practice is messy, but setup is simple: put down a drop cloth, elevate your canvas on cups placed around the rim, and mix your colors. Once you're ready, layer the paint in a cup, pour, then tilt your canvas.

It's very forgiving, and the patterns emerge in a meditative way. You can experiment with ratios, and add silicone for cell patterns. Each pour is one of a kind, and although it responds to your input, you can never be sure how it will turn out.

Mess
Embrace the chaos
Paint runs off the canvas edges. Use drop cloths and accept that the work surface gets coated.
Difficulty
Easy to start
This one is super beginner-friendly!
Time to first win
Same-day finish
The marbled effect appears immediately. Drying overnight just hardens what's already there.
