Acrylic Paint Pouring
The paint practically marbles itself.
Acrylic paint pouring involves mixing acrylic paint with a pouring medium, layering the colors in a cup, and pouring the mixture across a canvas. You tilt the canvas to move the paint around, and the colors form natural swirls and cells as they settle.
The practice is messy, but setup is simple: put down a drop cloth, elevate your canvas on cups placed around the rim, and mix your colors. Once you're ready, layer the paint in a cup, pour, then tilt your canvas.
It's very forgiving, and the patterns emerge in a meditative way. You can experiment with ratios, and add silicone for cell patterns. Each pour is one of a kind, and although it responds to your input, you can never be sure how it will turn out.
You’ll love acrylic paint pouring if…
- you want professional-looking results without the learning curve
- the surprise of how the colors settle is part of the appeal
- you'd rather follow a recipe than develop a style
