Collage
Cut things up and rearrange them.
Collage is the practice of cutting up images and arranging them on a surface. Magazines, old books, postcards, photographs, anything you can scissor. You glue the pieces down to paper or canvas to make something new.
It's the lowest-setup art form. A pile of paper, scissors, and a glue stick is enough to start. Most people work small, on index cards or in small notebooks.
There's no right answer. The craft runs on intuition, which makes it freeing for some and frustrating for others. The learning curve is more about developing taste than technique.
You’ll love collage if…
- you want to start with whatever's already in the recycling bin.
- you want to scale up or down depending on the day.
- you need a hobby you can pause and pick back up.
What you'll need to get started
Vintage ephemera pack
A bundle of old magazines, postcards, ticket stubs, and other printed paper. Saves the hunting through your own house.
Acid-free glue stick
Regular glue sticks yellow over time. Acid-free glue keeps collages from going brittle and discolored.
Collage techniques and inspiration
Useful for seeing the range of what people do with the form, especially if you're feeling stuck.
Self-healing cutting mat with X-Acto knife
Scissors are fine but precise cuts need a knife. The mat protects your table and lets you work bigger.
